Why LetsGoNorth meets LetsGoSouth – peat is the theme at the moment.

Horses are the ultimate in sustainable travel.

Peat vs Horse Excrement” project.  “I am aware of work being done at Queens University, but I am afraid they do not have the depth of knowledge of what a horse eats as I do.  I have been dealing with horses since I was five years old.  Thoroughbreds and Shetland ponies have very differing diets which, of course, affects the execrement and therefore the product.  I was talking to the manager of a garden centre about it just yesterday.”

This summer I have visited the Bog of Allen (and the Discovery Park next door), Cudillero in Spain (where the peatlands are on the coast) and I was at Dungannon on a regular basis.  I lived in Scotland for 15 years, and studied the peat at Dunnet Head (the most northerly point – where I lived)and at Forsinard.

In our book Elements of the Environment – Peat, we talk about peat from different parts of the world, including an experiment with daffodils, has an effect on climate change. Much has been written about peat replacements, but none of the research has included how horse excrement can effect peat. We even participated in an Adventure Travel Research Association conference about it and even made a video. The proposed spur off the North Highland Way to the coast to Forsinard is described in the book, multi use of course.

If you want to assist us in developing the Way, and become a Friend of the North Highland Way, we have a Just Giving page here. If you donate during one of our climate change festivals, all of our books are at 10% discount. Contact us for details.

Selected people are invited to join us. We have invited the Rural Connections, George Ewing, to join us, and are now working with Vive Transition Together.

Starting in July 2023, and continuing through to the end of September, we will be doing concerted campaigns in Argyll and Orkney. Why Argyll, well it links mainland Scotland to Northern Ireland with historical links. We have our Environmental News based in Northern Ireland, although one would think that it was Orkney judging by the cover.

In September we support the North West Geopark as is it part of the North Highland Way. You can purchase your passports and Long Distance Walkers’ Association t shirts from our virtual Pilgrims Office
and even download our geology book.

In October we focus on sustainable travel, starting in Northern Ireland. Why Northern Ireland, read all about it in our book Spanish Gold comes to Northern Ireland. This is us on TripAdvisor

You can follow us on our other activities on our calendar, including to Spain. Why Spain?
